A unique voice with rich lows and clear highs, a poignant songwriter with candid, bold lyrics and unexpected musical structures, delivered in a sensual, soulful package of soft pop and jazz flavours, and catchy rhythm and blues.
About LANi
I was a poet first, a child pulling words from her heart and piecing
them together into a romantic, pondering, sometimes deep and dark
format. Lines fell together into a big red binder, now officially
called 'the red book'.
I remember the mystical shape of the acoustic guitar at my grandparents' place.
My aunt and uncle played it from what I remember. It was foreign and beautiful.
It excited and intimidated me. I wanted to play it like a kid wanted
the $100.00 item in the store window, with 50 cents in her pocket.
Well, eventually I did learn to play, enough to weave music into the
words. At the age of 15, I managed to garner my first guitar and my
first influence, a friend and fellow musician. The singing was the most natural part,
teaching myself to pitch and tuning my ear through sheer desire and determination. Later in life, I
centered myself enough to appreciate the benefits of professional vocal training. As a female vocalist, it is opening a whole new world full of fascinating concepts.
What are the songs about? Life experience and the feelings that go
with them. At first a means of channeling my emotions, now a powerful
way to connect with people and ignite their long lost feelings of
passion. The great thing about really living, is we get to go from childhood (a state of unknowing)
to maturity (a state of knowing) every time we throw ourselves wholeheartedly into a new venture.
We have different experiences, all of us. Our emotions and
desires can be strikingly similar. And music speaks all languages.
Many friendships and influences have been born out of my love for creating original music and many are yet to come.
It is my hope that you will enjoy what you hear and gain insight, courage, healing, inspiration or some other benefit from
the the music and words I have packaged together and called 'my
songs'.
Songwriters Workshop
I completed the Songwriter's Workshop in Summerland in April 2007. An amazing experience at the George Ryga Centre and such an inspiration to be at this 'spiritual center' for creativity. Had my 'aha' moment that brought tears to my eyes. Big praise for Roy Forbes and Bill Henderson for their generosity in sharing their gifts, Ken Smedley for making it all happen, and to all the songwriters who attended. Much luv to you!
